New TRIO Research Building Officially Inaugurated

Earlier today, Ina Brandes, Minister of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia, joined Prof. Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee, Rector of the University of Cologne, Prof. Dr. Edgar Schömig, CEO and Medical Director of University Hospital Cologne, and many other distinguished guests to officially open the new Translational Research for Infectious Diseases and Oncology (TRIO) building at the Cologne University Hospital Campus.
The TRIO building is a major milestone for research in infectious diseases and oncology. It will serve as a hub for interdisciplinary collaboration, bringing together cutting-edge research with direct clinical applications. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia supported the project with 90 million euros, ensuring an outstanding environment for scientific innovation.
For us at the Institute of Virology, moving into an entire floor within TRIO is a game-changer. The new space offers state-of-the-art lab facilities and advanced technologies that significantly strengthen our infrastructure. Additionally, the TRIO building opens up entirely new opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. Our work benefits enormously from the close proximity to other research teams and the cutting-edge technologies now at our fingertips.”
With up to 300 researchers from different fields under one roof, the TRIO building promises to be a thriving center for innovation, bringing fresh ideas and new momentum to our mission of tackling infectious diseases and cancer.
We’re proud to be part of this exciting new chapter!
