COVIM FUNDING RENEWED FOR THIRD PERIOD

Immunological mechanisms and their targeted application are of central importance in numerous fields of modern medicine. This applies to infectious disease medicine as well as to transplant medicine, oncology, neurology, and many other medical specialties. A comprehensive understanding of immune responses, along with their reliable and standardized assessment, forms an essential foundation for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of numerous diseases.

However, the standardized assessment of specific immune responses has so far been established only for selected humoral and cellular analyses. In many cases, validated and scalable methods for assessing complex immune responses are lacking. Standardized measurement methods are therefore crucial for evaluating innovative therapeutic approaches, ensuring comparability of results across sites and studies, and sustainably strengthening the translational capabilities of university medicine. The immunity platform of the NUM COVIM (COllaboratiVe IMmunity Platform of the NUM) aims to address this unmet need by providing high-quality, standardized immunological assay methods.

We are proud to announce COVIM has started its third funding period, now as a new research infrastructure of the NUM. During this period the project aims to expand to additional locations, reaching a total of 25 collaborating labs.

COVIM, founded in 2020 as a cooperation between Prof. Dr Florian Klein (Uniklinik Köln) and Prof. Dr Leif Erik Sander (Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin), proved highly successful already in its previous funding periods, resulting in over 100 publications, which were repeatedly cited as the basis for national recommendations.

To reinforce and support the COVIM coordination team, Dr Lisa Fröhlich and Dr Jonas Goergens were recruited.
