Artem Receives Promovendenpreis from the Fleckenstein Foundation

We’re excited to share that Artem Ashurov, a doctoral candidate at our lab, has been awarded the Promovendenpreis of the Bernhard and Ingrid Fleckenstein Foundation during the 33rd Annual Meeting of the Society for Virology. This 5,000-euro prize recognizes outstanding doctoral research in the field of virology within German-speaking countries.
Artem’s doctoral thesis, “HCMV-Neutralization through Broad Antibody Targeting”, explored the complex humoral immune response to human cytomegalovirus (HCMV). Working with colleagues from the Institute of Virology and the universities of Essen, Ulm, and Texas, Artem identified new vulnerable structures of the virus and discovered potent neutralizing antibodies that outperform those currently under clinical investigation.
Artem came to Germany from Ukraine in 2018 to study medicine. He is now in his tenth semester and has been working on his doctoral thesis in the Experimental Immunology Lab since 2020. He holds a scholarship from the Friedrich-Ebert Foundation and has also received a doctoral fellowship from the German Center for Infection Research.
